Ortho Evra Patch: Stroke Side Effects and Safety Risks

Ortho Evra Linked to Stroke Risk
The Ortho Evra contraceptive patch releases estrogen through the skin into the bloodstream. Using the patch, women are exposed to much higher levels of estrogen than most birth control pills. Greater levels of estrogen exposure have been found to increase the risk of adverse side effects like stroke or blood clots.
Since its introduction to the market in 2002, over ten million prescriptions have been written for the birth control patch under the brand name Ortho Evra. In 2004, there were 9,677 reports of adverse effects from Ortho Evra birth control patch.
Among the side effects reported have been debillitating strokes, leaving some users almost completely paralyzed. Ortho Evra lawsuits have been filed nationwide on behalf of women who have died or been seriously injured by blood clots allegedly caused by the Ortho Evra patch.

It has long been known that estrogen can increase the risk of blood clots and strokes (thrombosis). However, Ortho-McNeil, the manufacturer of the Ortho Evra birth control patch, has previously asserted that the patch and the pill carry roughly the same risks.
On January 18, 2008, the FDA approved additional changes to the warning label of the Ortho Evra Contraceptive Transdermal Patch to include the results of a new study. The study found that users of the Ortho Evra birth control patch ages 15-44, were at a higher risk of developing serious blood clots or venous thromboembolism (VTE) than women using birth control pills. VTE can lead to pulmonary embolism, which is a life-threatening condition.
This is the third update to the warning label of the Ortho Evra birth control patch which seems to confirm fears of the potential health threat. In November 2005, Ortho McNeil changed its warning label on Ortho Evra to alert women that using the patch exposes them to about 60 percent more estrogen than the estrogen from using birth-control pills. In September 2006, the FDA once again updated the warning label on Ortho Evra to include the results of a study that found a nearly two-fold increase in the risk of blood clots with the use of the Ortho Evra birth control patch over birth control pills.
In litigation against Ortho-McNeil and Johnson & Johnson, lawyers for Ortho Evra patients have charged that from April 2002 to December 2004, there were more than 500 serious health problems reported associated with the patch compared to 61 from the most popular form of the pill. There were allegedly four times as many strokes reported in women wearing the patch compared to women on the pill, even though the pill was taken by the equivalent of three times as many women.
In 2004, at least 12 women in the U.S. died from blood clots and strokes believed to be related to the Ortho Evra patch. Women who use Ortho Evra are exposed to about 60 percent more total estrogen in their blood than if they use a typical birth control pill containing 35 micrograms of estrogen.
According to press reports, since the 2004 introduction of the birth control patch in Canada (sold under the brand name Ortho), two Canadian women died and 15 others suffered blood clots or other serious medical problems after using the patch.
